Dogs & skipping a generation It goes along with the punnet square & tightening up on the 1st square. Breeding two dogs(1st generation) you may get certain traits from parents but won't be as concentrated or locked in as the 3 generation, i.e. the grand kids. The 3rd generation (grandkids) will have stronger & focused genes. If you see the 1st crosses of the Sorrell's dog Hicks Money neither out crossed dog look as him. But starting with the 3rd, his grandkids more were copies of him.
Money. 1st generation.

Now 3rd generation, grandkids & locking in traits .
Regardless of what gets added over time, dogs still keep strong Sorrell's traits.
3rd generation

And so on & so on. Mango has grandkids that could pass for some of the same offspring directly off Hicks Money the pure Sorrell's dog. Such as this one

Money is a close as her 6th generation & also goes back to her 9th generation yet she & a few belly mates are copies of money.
Older breeders that's been around for a few decades with at least 2 handful of generations will say the same such as Mike Norrod & dogs taking after grandparents more than parents. That's the basics of what a Punnett Square teaches you as a breeder.
