True. Supplements can be tricky. It is really hard to tell what is working and what is just passing thru.
Full blood work ups and urinalysis testing on a regular basis and supplements adjusted based on those results. Very accurate and very expensive.
Even then it is hard to detect whether the chicken/beef protein or the supplemented protein is passing thru.
When I first got started our "urinalysis" program was very old school. We watched the daily piss as we started work and started supplements. When the urine darkened the supplements were cut back. When the urine started to clear the supplements were increased.
After a week or so, maybe 10 days, the feed to supplement ratio would dial itself in based on urine color.
The post workout meal/soup mixture had the majority of supplementation. The body is starving for whatever it can get right afterwards so we supplemented then. This meal is designed to aid in recovery. The feeding at night was for weight and fuel, lots of fats and minimal supplementation.
The morning piss dictated the supplementation for that day.
It was working so I never questioned the accuracy. Thinking back I wonder how accurate we were with the changing the supplementations based on the visual appearance of piss.
It seems like that was a hundred years ago.
