My old dog had bad arthritis and trouble with her joints as she got older, and she had liver problems. I knew of the risks with rimadyl and refused to give it to her, but it is what the vets all push.
What I found helped the most was moderate exercise, keeping her lean, feeding a raw diet supplemented with a lot of salmon oil, and giving her a joint supplement (glucosamine and MSN) every day. I gave Synflex for humans until the cost became prohibitive, then she got Liquid Health 5000 which I bought in a gallon size (lasted a year).
All this worked together and helped her live a longer life (14 yrs) with less pain until cancer got her in the end. I know the Liquid Health 5000 worked as I ran out of it at one point and I saw a difference in the 2 weeks she was off it until the new bottle arrived.
