o'stevens sounds like the jealous one to me ,,,i can not believe anyone actually believes this b.s about him not knowing homer was fighting jeep ,,,,,no one in their right mind lets you borrow a ch dog to match into someone and not ask who it was going into,,,cut the games old man,,,crenshaw's dog's were not killers?? well jeep killed homer not the other way around,, all of this dog would have and that dog would have is all hogwash, the only one that was jealous was him,,,i have heard more people try to put jeep down,,,well haters are gonna hate ,and what we all have learned from Micheal jordan and Lebron james ,is there is always some guy that has to hate because their team got beat or their fighter got beat,or their driver lost,,sound to me like ozzie did not take homers loss to jeep very well,,,homer was an amazing dog from what I've read but so was jeep and he was open to the world!!!

Jrizzel, Homer fought 2.5 lb below his best weight, and so was not at his best strength.
Most knowledgeable people, who've seen both dogs, believe the fight wouldn't have gone too long if Homer were at his best weight of 44 lb.

Glad I got to read this interview again.. IMHO, I saw Jeep go on one occasion, maybe two and he was a little above average on average dogs or dogs not as well conditioned. Showed bad faults on those two occasions. I never thought Jeep was a deep game dog. Just had a top conditioner and handler and smart match maker. That's usually 90% of the winning anyhow.
I also saw Jeep's sire Boe take the count standing on all four feet on the line, with Finley clicking his fingers etc. trying to get Boe to make the scratch. Boe was bitten down very fast and badly by Lonzo's Vindicator. Vindicator crunched Boe hard in the Chest from the get go. Boe was still a decent pit dog to last long as he did. Vindicator had only nub teeth, no hangers. Even with nub teeth, Vindicator bit Boe so hard the blood squirted into the crowd and side wall.
I along with Tar Heel Matt and Sonny Shropshire have spent a couple of days with the late Ozzie Stevenson. He personally told us all of the events of what happen in the Jeep x Homer match. Same as you have read. I felt he was very sincere, truthful, and was emotional over losing Homer that way. Was only some days later Ozzie lost his wife. That pretty well was the end of his dog career. Ozzie was already up in age when I met him. He took a liking to Matt and sent Matt some good bred dogs.
M. Gainey and W. Truett were present at the Jeep X Homer match. Mr. Gainey felt the Homer dog was the better dog of the two.
Here is another little tid bit of info. Today it could only be considered hearsay. Means very little this far down the road. The Charlie dog that was litter mate to Jeep quit in his last match. Jack Kelley and Crenshaw were the best of friends and Jack wrote the match with the losing Charlie dog being named Spot. Jack was called about this error by V. Jackson and some other dog men. Jack let it stand as he said the owner of Charlie did a lot of business with his magazine. I was still getting the SDJ journal then and remember something about this particular match being reported as such. No skin off my back, so I could have cared less. I never believed every last thing printed up in those magazines. The real dog men knew where the good ones were at.
Jack Kelley and family later moved out West with J. Crenshaw and looked after him till he passed. That was how close they were.
It seems once again fellows no one has and will never corner the market on the very best pit dogs. Some dog men/breeders, just do better or come a little closer than most. But over time one winning family fades out and another sensation takes off.
I told V.J. before he left for Texas. He needed to stop inbreeding anymore around the Mayfield Snake dog. Because, even though getting unbelievable hard biting and fast killing abilities. Ole Snake being a well bred, fair weather hard biting Cur. LOL You might get one that would stay all day. Others look just as good, go thirty minutes or so and just up and let go, spooked by the crowd or what ever. It seems the percentage got worse over time from what I have been told.
When you look at Rom status dogs compare the number of times the stud was bred and usually to good bitches. Compare total CH/GR CH produced etc. That is were the answer lies on a producing stud dog. A dog that has been bred 500 times and has only say 5 to 8 champions etc. Not to much to brag about. If I have offended anyone I apologize.
