If the hct is at 37 or below.... they cannot perform. There are NO shortcuts, you can use epogen, but if you use a fraction too much, you risk the blood being too thick and dog dying. The best thing to do is Check your bkoodwork before the keep, midpoint, and week prior, that way you know if the dog is being overworked, or underfed. Downtown used to feed the dog as much as he could eat during the hardest part (peak ) of keep, he said that Whatever the dog didn't use, he would dump out. Scientifically speaking, only 3 reasons Why rbc, hct, or hemoglobin is low:

1. Overworked.. not enough recovery
2. Underfed: worrying about making weight vs What dog needs
3. Babesia
