I wrote in the thread instead of making a new one.
My question is....
What guage IV catheter is recommended for a 30-35lb dog?
Can you premix dex in a bag of ringers before the race starts...or is it better to inject the dex separate after the IV line is set-up?
Good thought.
I would say 18-20 and would not go any higher than 20.
I would say to keep it separate, as dex may not be what you need, but Solu-Delta or Solu-Medrol.
I would use dex for, say, a pressure biter ... where the dog is severely swollen, but still "with it" mentally ... but would use Solu-Delta if the dog was totally exhausted, hypo-volemic, shocky, etc.

Much appreciated Jack! Thanx
Any reason you would would not go higher than 20G? (too small?)
Gotcha, 20G it is.
Found this online.
3. Appropriate-size IV catheter:
a. 24-ga for puppies and kittens
b. 22-ga for cats and small dogs
c. 20-ga for medium-sized dogs
d. 18-ga large dogs
Yep, sounds about right.
Good research & good luck!
Gentleman I may have missed something in regaurd to the web site mentioned earlier. They seem to require A Liscense for certain orders.
