The science of line breeding methods
I bred a dog or two over the years.
Long , long before I started breeding I listened & learned the basic's.
The correct way of reading a pedigrees is from right - left. Which dogs to concern yourself with & which ones to over look.
I learned about how to identify & use the Punnett square also known as the Monk Gregor's Punnett square & also how to line breed using the Fibonacci sequence in my breeding methods.
There's a lot more to breeding bulldogs other than put the two you like together to get & continue consistency.
There's many ways to breed dogs but there is no one only way to breed a dog.
Trial & error will always be the best teacher.
The only way to actually know your dogs is hands on with each & every dog in each & every generation.
The key to breeding is to maintain & make better than the last generation.
With each generation is a cleansing process of keeping the good & getting out the bad. I know it is far better to use the purest of families to get & maintain family styles.
As a breeder I focus more on the style the dog use more than anything the families of dogs in him.
Families are identified more by there style than anything to me.
A cross is a rough draft of what the families combined may be down the road, but once line breeding you can go south fast.
Try not to judge upcoming breeding's based on a single dog nor a single litter.
It takes around 4 generations to lock in the cross & max out what it brings to the table.
Anything less than 4 generations & you may lose what you were working on.
Around 4 generations or more is when you will know what to add to your family next .
If the family lacks certain traits, it will show you by then .
That's when dogs show you which ones to breed too. traits are locked in by 4 generations.
When crossing strains it's far better to use the purest version of what you need over a dog that has some of it.
In most cases dogs skip a generation so focus more on the grand kids turning out what you are looking for more than the direct offspring to have more of the desired traits.
Some family breeders focus on a single dog. I more the breeder than the single dog.
Although I have inbred many of dogs, I prefer to line breed more than inbreed to keep & maintain hy-bred vigor with each generation.
You have to leave your yard less.
What is a Punnet square?
The 1st pair of dogs make up the line or generation.
Certain things or outcomes are expected from this blend of 2 dogs over so many generations but as soon as you out cross the Punnett changes & starts over & so do the outcomes.
Puttnett squares are what used to keep consistency generation after generation. Also know as the like begets like , pick & use only dogs that look & have the same style as the generation before to keep the style locked into the family.
Using the Fibonacci sequence as a breeding style of maintain thru line breeding a certain amount of % in your dogs each generation.
The Fibonacci sequence is simply taking the sum of the 1st 2 numbers & adding to get the next number.
But in breeding it's a continuous pattern of taking a single male dog you like to x amount of females and then taking siblings of 50% of that males blood & line breeding.
By the 3 or 4th generation the outcrossed blood is locked in while maintain the same male% as if directly off him to keep & maintain hybred vigor.
Pick the best & start to repeat the process.
Best to me for line breeding battle crossed dogs using many of families to combine into a single family while maintaining specific styles.
There's so much more to line breeding & too much to keep going.
After a dozen & a half generations & a half dozen or more branches to my family tree I think what works for me exceed what someone else had wrote in some book with less hands on experience with the same amount of generations.
You don't have to inbreed dogs to keep them tight. You just have to keep them tight.

I like to use Sorrells Uncle Bud because it's a easy to read pedigree.
Star with Red jerry & see how many females he was bred to & the style used to combine them to maintain & high% of Red Jerry in Uncle Bud.
Now I did the same with some of mines but used Crossfire in place of Red Jerry .
But also at the same time I had a solid litter & made a tighter version of that breeding .
You can do more than one thing @ the same time you know.
