It's not even close.
It's like asking who's better today. The players of the former AFL or today's NFL.
I believe the only argument that can be made is that it is a handicap match based on the advancements that have been made over the decades. Wether through breeding practices, schooling, nutrition, general care, etc. "had they known what we know" type of argument. But they didn't know what we know.
Today's dogs are geared and bred around rules that were established in the 50's also. So whatever they were doing in the 1920's is probably a whole different ball game... I'm not that much of a historian to know how things went down 100 years ago. Our standards are really based around the rules of the game and the strategic angles the breeder takes to put his dogs in the win column while playing by those rules. If there were different rules back then, the dogs were probably different also. but going by Cajun rules, past vs present probably isn't even a real contest.
My belief would be ... it depends on whose dogs :mrgreen:
There has been a huge advancement in feed, in preventative medicines, in supplements, in conditioning and in aftercare. Today's dogs should have a distinctive advantage. My other thought would be I never saw a dog from the 20's so I can't say, only speculate.
With that said, I have always believed, and continue to believe, large percentages of these dogs win in spite of their owners/handlers/conditioners. I would bet back then that percentage would be less. Mostly because there was no internet to incorrectly inform, there was less supplementation to abuse/over use, there were fewer tools to over train/over work a dog. And maybe more, on average the dog man of yester year was more knowledgeable across the board dog man to dog man because there were fewer "dog men" back then (and I say 'dog men' with a wink-wink and a nod-nod). I believe there were far less dumbasses per bulldog capita back then.
With all that rambling I believe good dogs back then would compete with good dogs of today and vice-versa. The 20 minute cur of today would check up the same back then. The game plug would plug away in both eras. For me the only way to tell the difference would be to look at the calendar. EWO
