I think calling these dogs "hounds" is kind of a limp-dick thing to do.
Havana Danny had a good thread on Facebook about this.
I think most of the people who call their dogs "hounds" are your typical, part-time, "not really" dogmen.
People who are truly passionate about their dogs are PROUD of their dogs, and what separates them from all other dogs: GAMENESS.
Havana Danny said it best when he said, "I dedicated my life to BULLDOGS, I don't know nothing about hounds!!!"

Exactly
I wouldn't even dignify such a question with a response.
I guess I will quote another dogman, Bobby Hall, when he said, "If you want something soft, put some shit in your hands, but if you want a bulldog let me know."
Every single oldtimer I have ever met in my life calls their dogs bulldogs. (Not "pit bulls," not "pits," and most definitely not "hounds.") They call them bulldogs.
The term "hounds" is a fairly-recent internet term that, like I said, is being used by many part-time, wanna-be dogmen.
As far as I am concerned, they're bulldogs.
Now I may shorten it when I ask, "How many 'dogs' you feeding?", but I would never ask how many 'hounds' ... although I am sure many people have that shit mixed into what they have, judging by their records

We all have different opinions and ways of going about things. Some do it to not deal with the negative attention received when saying bulldog or Pitbull or whatever. Others are more intense about bulldogging than others I agree, nothing wrong with that either. If you don't like it when referring to your dogs let them know. Hopefully the convo continues and bulldogging is the topic. Honestly I know what I'm working with & have got too much going on to worry about what somebody else calls my dogs, words ain't never proved shit.
But then again......... I was taught it ain't a BULLDOG until it proves it is. Kind of along the same lines as just cause you have dogs it doesn't make you a dogman. Certain things have to be deemed so. But like I said we all have our different ways, maybe good for finding who's on your side and who's across from you. LOL

i dont typically refer to them as hounds... kinda sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me, however i must admit i have referred to them as "mutts", but not in the duragatory literal sense of the word, more so as a shortcut term of endearment..... "time to feed the mutts!" hell, i think ive even said "pooches" once or twice..... but i do agree with it being a dipshit thing to do, these dogs do infact deserve more respect than that, & i try not to make a habit out of it......

Everyone can call their dogs what they wish. However, gamedogs, the sport from historical point of view, the history, the men and women behind these great warriors and the men that put out books, magazines and databases to preserve it all is everyones business.
When someone posts a pic of GR CH Buck and asks, "Name this hound," that is retarded!
so are these bulldogs or bull & terriers?

Lol!!! Yup, calls the yard a "bunch of scruffy tailed curs" on a daily basis. 42 years in January. I think it's strictly Ina joking fashion though. I know it makes him squint when he sees others call them hounds. Any time he's being serious they are called bulldogs.
I've called these dogs many things, some can't be repeated in polite company. I think what makes me cringe the most is the context some folks use it in, makes it pretty obvious how serious they are about what they do and all in all that's what really rubs me the wrong way. the fair weather, half assed, fly by night types. I don't really care if you call them puffalmups or woozles as long as ur heart is where it's supposed to be.

Seems like you have you have your panties in the tightest wad of all ... and yes, I do think you're retarded if you believe these dogs are "hounds"; they're not.
Hounds are a specific type of dog, and bulldogs are not included amongst this group, and (yes) it's retarded to try to label them otherwise.
Calling Gr Ch Buck a "dog" is correct (as bulldogs are a kind of dog).
Calling Gr Ch Buck a "hound" (which is a specific type of dog Buck is not) is wrong. Period.
Further, there is a certain badge of honor implied in the word "bulldog," and people who care about their dogs make sure they give it to them.
Those who who don't give a damn don't feel it's important.
Based on what these dogs go through, to stay alive on a yard, and which places them in the group they belong in, they deserve to be called what they are.

You can call them what you want, but that doesn't make you correct.
You can call a spider an "insect," but it simply means you're ignorant. Spiders belong to a different kind of arthropod group.
Calling a German shepherd a "hound" is just as retarded as calling a bulldog a hound.
There are many people who say ignorant, stupid shit on a daily basis ... and, if you enjoy being amongst that group, you're correct it is your right to be amongst said group of retards ... but it doesn't mean people who know better need to join that group.
Some people care enough about what they're talking about to attempt to speak with precision and make important distinctions

I call my dogs bulldogs around whomever when they ask what type of dog I have. When I say bulldog, the first thing they say ask is if they're English Bulldogs? I simply tell them no and just repeat bulldogs. That is the answer they get, and invariably they stop asking after receiving the same answer.

I see I need to clarify everything for you. First, it was to point out that bulldogs are not hounds. This isn't an opinion, it is a fact.
Now you're saying it is ignorant to be disrespectful, so let me help you think accurately once more:
Ignorance = ignorance (being wrong and not knowing any better)
Being disrespectful = being disrespectful (not treating people with dignity)
They're not the same thing either :embarrassed:
Now then, if you want to call me a hypocrite, for being a tad disrespectful, when I expect people to be respectful, then I am guilty as charged :-t
However, being a hypocrite isn't being ignorant either, lol, so you have some real trouble understanding your words and applying them correctly
So, as a recap, here is what we've learned today:
Hounds are dogs.
Pit bulls are dogs
But pit bulls are not hounds and hounds are not pit bulls.
And it is IGNORANT to say or think otherwise.
Ignorance is not disrespect, and disrespect is not ignorance, and it is IGNORANT to interchange these words as if they mean the same thing.
However, making rules that you expect others to follow, and then not following them yourself, is HYPOCRITICAL, and I agree

Calling a German shepherd a "hound" is just as retarded as calling a bulldog a hound.
Not to change the subject because I agree with the name BULLDOG is title that is earned not given to each and every American Pit Bull Terrier.
To call a GSD hound is not retarded as it may seem in it's country of final completion of standard it's called the Deutsch Schäferhund as most dogs in that country are called hund or pronounced hound as it refers to a dog. Even in the sport of Schutzhund all dogs are given the titles when earned of Portection Hound (Schutzhund) Schutzhund I , II , or III once the testing and titles have been earned.
My stance on the title BULLDOG is that it has to be earned not given to each and every dog that someone walks up with and there is only one way to earn such a title and let's face it most owners do not have the intestinal fortitude to see if their dogs deserve this title. So to me for some to call their POS a BULLDOG is a insult.

My best friends granddad got murdered and robbed and he was 86 and we buried him Sunday. Its a beautiful life here for a outdoorsman if u can afford it..I always say mutts because it keeps the dog thieves at bay and doesn't attract much attention from anyone..And I never crop my dogs ears so if anyone does luck up and find me its not as obvious. But for a small town atmosphere we rank nationally in violent crime..But just giving a different view of why some may say mutts.Lots of dog thieves here.

Interesting. But that is Germany, and you're talking a title. Also, I believe the German word "hund" is more akin to our word, DOG, and is not referring to the "specific kind" of dog, Hound.
Dogs are separated into groups, with hounds being a certain group of dog, in which the APBT does not belong.
I hear what you're saying, and I agree but disagree.
I agree to call a dog a BULLDOG is to bestow a sense of honor on the animal, but they are still called "bulldogs," regardless.
For example, I may say to you, "How many bulldogs you feeding?", meaning your yard of dogs in total, and you may say, "Twenty."
Now as we go through your yard, you might be saying this one's name, and that one's name, telling me how it's bred, etc. ... and then you may come upon one in particular and say, "Now this one right here's A BULLDOG!", implying he is a cut above the rest as to his proven gameness.
So the word, "Bulldog," is used by dogmen to speak of their dogs in general, but it is also emphasized when we step up to one who's really impressed us.
